Outlook vs Outlook Express

It is quite common for many users to get confused between the programs Outlook and Outlook Express. It must be noted that these two programs are completely different and should not be confused with each other.

Outlook Express

Outlook Express is a free email and news reader program that ships with Microsoft Windows. This program stopped shipping with Windows Vista and became known as Windows Mail.

Outlook Express offers basic email features such as SMTP sending, imap or POP3 email accounts. It provides full support for today's most important e-mail, news, and directory standards such as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension Hypertext Markup Language (MHTML), Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME), and Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). Full support ensures that you can take advantage of new technologies as well as seamlessly send and receive e-mail.


Microsoft outlook is an extensive messaging and collaboration software. To enable the full collabarative functionality, Outlook must be used with a Microsoft Exchange Server back end.

Outlook also provides performance and integration with Internet Explorer 5.5. Complete integration of e-mail, calendaring, and contact management, makes Outlook the perfect client for many business users.

Outlook is designed for use with the Internet (SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4), Exchange Server, or any other standards-based communication system that supports Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI), including voice mail. Outlook is based on Internet standards and supports today's most important e-mail, news, and directory standards, including LDAP, MHTML, NNTP, MIME, and S/MIME, vCalendar, vCard, iCalendar, and full support for HTML mail.

Outlook is very commonly used in corporate environments and in large/small businesses. If you require more than just email, then Outlook is the option to consider. However, for basic sending and receiving of email, Outlook Express works fine.
